As part of the new STEM project we are running at Neale –Wade and 3 other local secondary schools, I have had the opportunity to visit RAF Marham to develop links and see STEM in action.
I spent the first day getting to know the base and finding out more about the career opportunities available; I was surprised to find out that there are over 50 different careers within the RAF! The second day was spent with the Communications department looking at the use of radar and complex logistical informations systems that run the planes.
I was lucky enough to see the new 5th Generation aircraft Marham has recently acquired, the F35b. Sadly, due to security I wasn’t allowed to take my phone into the aircraft hangar to take photographs. It was fantastic to see so many different aspects of Maths and Science in action.
On Friday, I return for my last day to spend a day with the Engineering department. I also found out about some of the exciting STEM work that the RAF delivers as part of the outreach programme and am hoping we can get them in to enthuse our students as much as they have me.
