Mathematics Curriculum Overview
Our Mathematics curriculum develops confident, resilient and independent learners who can apply mathematical knowledge to solve problems and make sense of the world around them. Students build fluency in number, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability while developing reasoning, problem-solving and analytical thinking skills that support learning across the curriculum and beyond. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students gain the knowledge and confidence needed for further education, employment and everyday life.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
Students secure strong foundations in mathematical concepts and develop their ability to reason, solve problems and communicate mathematically.
| Year 7 | Year 8 | Year 9 |
| Number skills, calculations and negative numbers | Powers, roots and prime factorisation | Advanced number and algebra |
| Algebraic expressions and equations | Fractions and percentage calculations | Standard form and index laws |
| Factors, multiples, HCF and LCM | Solving equations | Direct and inverse proportion |
| Perimeter and measurement | Angles and geometry | Probability and statistics |
| Data handling and two-way tables | Circumference and circles | Equations, inequalities and sequences |
| Problem-solving and mathematical reasoning | Area and perimeter applications | Pythagoras, transformations, vectors and surface area |
Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)
Students follow the GCSE Mathematics curriculum, studying content appropriate to Foundation or Higher tier pathways.
Key areas include:
Number and numerical methods
Algebra, graphs and functions
Ratio, proportion and rates of change
Geometry and measures
Probability
Statistics
Problem-solving and mathematical reasoning
Students revisit and deepen prior learning through a spiral curriculum, building confidence and exam readiness throughout Key Stage 4.
Assessment
Assessment is embedded throughout the curriculum through:
Retrieval practice and starter activities
Regular classwork and homework
End-of-unit assessments
Mid-year assessments
PPE/mock examinations
End-of-year examinations
Enrichment and Careers
Mathematics develops logical thinking, resilience and analytical skills that are essential for a wide range of careers. The curriculum highlights applications in engineering, finance, architecture, technology, science, medicine and data analysis while encouraging students to become confident mathematical problem-solvers.
