Science Curriculum Overview
Our Science curriculum inspires curiosity about the world and develops students' understanding of key scientific concepts through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students build scientific knowledge alongside practical, investigative and analytical skills, enabling them to think critically, solve problems and evaluate evidence. Through hands-on experiments, enquiry-based learning and real-world applications, we aim to develop confident, scientifically literate learners who are prepared for further study and future careers in STEM and beyond.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
| Year 7 | Year 8 | Year 9 |
|---|---|---|
| Particles, states of matter and separation techniques | Energy, temperature and heat transfer | Respiration, health and disease |
| Forces, energy transfers and motion | Earth structure, rocks and climate change | Atomic structure and the periodic table |
| Cells, organisation and body systems | Forces, motion and simple machines | Magnetism, waves and electricity |
| Atoms, elements, compounds and chemical reactions | Electricity and circuits | Reactivity and rates of reaction |
| Sound, light and waves | Ecosystems, evolution and adaptation | Ecosystems and biodiversity |
| Materials, reproduction, heredity and variation | Acids and alkalis, healthy diets and digestion | Particle model and cell biology |
| Space and the universe | Introduction to GCSE concepts and required practical skills |
In Key Stage 3, students develop a secure foundation in scientific knowledge and practical skills across all three disciplines
Throughout KS3, students complete regular practical investigations, knowledge recall activities, assessments and end-of-year examinations to support progression to GCSE study.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)
Students follow either the AQA Combined Science Trilogy or AQA Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) pathway.
| Biology | Chemistry | Physics |
|---|---|---|
| Cell biology | Atomic structure and bonding | Energy |
| Organisation and body systems | Quantitative chemistry | Electricity |
| Infection and response | Chemical changes and electrolysis | Particle model of matter |
| Bioenergetics | Energy changes | Atomic structure |
| Homeostasis and response | Rates of reaction and equilibrium | Forces and motion |
| Inheritance, variation and evolution | Organic chemistry | Waves |
| Ecology and biodiversity | Chemical analysis | Magnetism and electromagnetism |
| Using resources and Earth's atmosphere | Space Physics (Triple Science) |
Assessment
Assessment is embedded throughout the curriculum through:
Practical investigations and required practical activities
Recall quizzes and retrieval practice
Knowledge checks and end-of-topic assessments
Mid-year and end-of-year examinations
Mock examinations at GCSE level
Regular feedback and improvement activities (DIRT)
Enrichment and Careers
Students are encouraged to develop their understanding of how science influences everyday life and global challenges, including sustainability, climate change, healthcare, genetics, engineering and technological innovation. The curriculum promotes scientific enquiry, data analysis, communication and problem-solving skills that are highly valued across a wide range of careers and further education pathways.
Through a carefully sequenced curriculum from Year 7 to Year 11, students gain the knowledge, practical expertise and confidence needed to become successful scientists and informed citizens.
